The InterMix project was an innovative Cultural Diversity project delivered by Essex Cultural Diversity Project and led by Inderjit Sandhu, ECDP Programme Manager. Over the course of a 2-year programme, InterMix delivered a programme of creative training and development programme that linked mainstream organisations with Black and minority ethnic artists and arts organisations.

Funded by Arts Council England and Essex County Council, the project developed an innovative model of engagement that enabled all partners to explore new ways to develop culturally diverse artists and audiences as well as encourage best practice in artistic development, mentoring, and capacity building for diverse artists and arts organisations.

Devised out of a series of consultation and evaluation processes, InterMix responded to the needs of its strategic and local partners. This feedback formed the basis of the project aims for InterMix that were as follows:

  1. To embed a sustainable, creative infrastructure for DIVERSE artists and arts organisations.
  2. To underpin the programme with high quality artistic and professional development opportunities for all partners engaged in the project.
  3. To broker new collaborations and partnerships that result in best practice working.
  4. To test a model of working that begins to develop ‘hubs of excellence’, in creative diversity practice.
  5. To diversify the current artistic offer in Essex and therefore increase audience reach within diverse communities.

The project ran from 2011-2013, and during the 2-year project, InterMix facilitated:

  • 10 new partnerships
  • 5 new artistic commissions for Black and minority ethnic artists
  • 120 artists involved directly through showcasing events
